Earlier this week, Brian and I decided to have a small party Saturday at our house for some of our work friends so they could meet Molly. Saturday afternoon, everything was going smoothly, Cassidy was napping, Brian had just run to the liquor store, and I was working on making macaroni and cheese with Molly in the Bjorn carrier on my chest. It was about 3:45 and our party was scheduled for 4:00.
Molly started fussing and I knew she needed to be fed. So I turned down the mac and cheese and made my way into the living room so I could nurse her before everyone arrived. On my way in I must have started unhooking her. When I got to the living room I noticed Brian had raised all of the blinds for the party. Our couch is right next to a window and there are apartments just next door. So, I went to release the roman shades, but couldn’t do it left-handed. Not thinking, I raised my right arm to adjust the shade and since I had already unhooked the Bjorn, Molly toppled out of the Bjorn and fell to the floor. She landed on her head.
I freaked out and she started screaming immediately. I scooped her up and called Brian to come straight home because I had dropped the baby. Meanwhile, Molly’s screaming woke Cassidy. Brian came running in the door and we noticed an egg starting to form on Molly’s head. Our first guest arrived within the next two minutes, so we left Cassidy with her and headed out to Hasbro Children's Hospital.
We went to the emergency room where they took some initial stats and then got us a room so the doctors could examine her. After a short wait, we were escorted back to get a CAT scan which determined she had a skull fracture with some light bleeding beneath the skull, but there was no brain damage. Such a relief! But, because of her age, we were admitted overnight to stay in the PICU for observation. Apparently there’s not much you can do for a skull fracture and it will heal on it’s own. She had a fantastic night, slept well and ate well, giving them zero reasons to worry. We were released at 11:00 am on Sunday morning.
In her crib in the PICU. You can see the swelling above her left ear on the corner of her head.
We feel extremely lucky that as awful as it sounds, she will be perfectly fine. Baby bones heal easily and newborns are super resilient. I’ve gone over every step over and over again thinking about how I can’t believe this happened. BUT, we have also come to the point where we just feel extremely lucky that it didn’t cause more damage.
We had a follow up appointment this morning with our regular doctor and he agrees that she looks great. Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and prayers over the past few days, they mean the world to us!
