could use your help...

One of our project goals for the summer is to refinish our dining room table. Brian bought it many years ago from a friend of a friend along with a matching hutch. Three years ago we refinished the hutch and it came out beautifully (if we say so ourselves). I am a big fan of a blog called Design Sponge. On this blog they show "before and afters" of readers' refinished furniture. I LOVE the stuff they do and they've inspired me to tackle the dining room table. We sanded it down and got everything ready, but I just can't decide what color(s). I would love to hear your opinions?!?

Some things to consider:
  • Three of the four walls are a pale green with a yellow undertones. The moulding is bright white, as well as, the fourth wall leading into the living room.
  • There is a wide doorway into the living room (so it's very visible from the dining room) and it's walls are a warm, khaki brown color.
  • The chairs were purchased three years ago. They're new and have a cherry finish.
  • We have the original wood floors (1928) and they're a very warm almost orange finish.
  • Under the table is my grandmother's braided rug. The colors are shades of browns, oranges, and a grayish blue.
  • The dining room is pretty dark, so we're thinking a lighter color for the table will hopefully lighten the room.
  • There's no overhead lighting.
  • In some of the pictures you can see a scalloped edge on the table. Would you play this up by painting it a different color that the rest of the table? How about the table legs?
I really could use your help... Will you comment your thoughts for me???

I don't know about the color, but I do think it's a good idea to paint the scallops a different color to highlight them. I'll keep thinking, and I'll show Joe to see what he says!

I kinda like the original dark wood myself. But then again, I'm a little old fashioned! You did such a great job with Cassidy's room, I know whatever you decide to do will be awesome. Grumpy has no clue!

Love to all

man, i'm stumped too. are you going to keep the chairs dark? sorry if you said that and i missed it. i will keep thinking. i do have that color index book if you want to take a look at that for palettes.

my first thought was something with a maple or orangey tone -- sort of similar to the trunk and highchair, and also the inner brown/orange ring of the rug in your photos. and maybe the scallops could be cherry to tie the chairs in? i can't really picture it, but i agree, you have such good taste that whatever you decide will look great!

I wouldn't paint the scallop another color because it could look too busy. It would be nice to paint the top of the table a distressed paint color, letting some of the dark come through. Then leave the legs/base of the table and the chairs the wood finish. I would go with a linen white or maybe a lighter shade of the khaki color in the other room. Let me know if you need any help, not that you need it!

i've been thinking about this too and i can't think of much.. plus i'm not artsy like some of these folks! but, i was looking at it again and i think the dark table looks good. i had originally thought a crackle paint but i thought it would be too shabby chic and not your style. i looked again tonight and i thought maybe a vine painted accross it in an orange or off white or green or a scroll like pattern down the center as if it were a table runner... i think that would look really interesting...

they're up!
